Zoe's Junge - book based activity as part of Rainy Day Mum's Story Book Summer Jungle Themed week from Hand Made Kids Art

KirainydaymumStory-Book-Summer-BUTTON-250cking off the second week of Story Book Summer I am delighted to welcome Jamie from Hand Made Kids Art to launch our Jungle week with Zoe’s Jungle. Last week saw a week of Under the Sea Book Based Activities and this week we have some Jungle themed book based activities to encourage Early Literacy in kids and a love of reading.

Hi, I am Jamie from Hand Made Kids Art. I am the mother of Lil B (5 years old), M-Woww (3 years old) and Jellybean (3 months old). At Hand Made Kids Art we engage in a lot of art and craft related activities. Reading new books is one way we get inspired to create art. We love reading, creating and exploring. We are excited to give you see a peak into our jungle safari adventure here on Rainy Day Mum.

To start our jungle adventure, we read the book Zoe’s Jungle written by Bethanie Murguia. The story is about a young girl and her sister enjoying their last few minutes on the playground before they have to leave. As their mother counts down the minutes, the girls go on one last jungle adventure.Zoe's Junge - book based activity as part of Rainy Day Mum's Story Book Summer Jungle Themed week from Hand Made Kids Art

After reading the book, Lil B and I discussed what type of animals live in the jungle and what other living things we would see in a jungle. We then set out to create our own jungle by creating a collage by gluing different materials to a flat surface.

Materials:

Book: Zoe’s Jungle by Bethanie Murguia
Construction Paper
Glue
Scissors
Pictures of Jungle Animals
Digital Camera (or Cell Phone Camera)
Printer

Tutorial:

First we gathered pictures of jungle animals. Old animal magazines or old books are great sources. If you need additional animals, you also can print photos from the internet or even draw your own!  We then selected our construction paper. Lil B wanted lots of green colored paper!

Next, I took a photo of Lil B. I told him to pretend he was in his jungle looking for animals. He struck his own pose for the camera. We printed out the photo and Lil B carefully cut himself out of the picture. We then cut out the tree, leaves and grass.  For the grass I had him cut a rectangle and then make cuts along one edge creating fringe (or grass).Zoe's Junge - book based activity as part of Rainy Day Mum's Story Book Summer Jungle Themed week from Hand Made Kids ArtZoe's Junge - book based activity as part of Rainy Day Mum's Story Book Summer Jungle Themed week from Hand Made Kids Art

Lil B played around with the layout of the images before we got out the glue. Once he had the layout the way he wanted, he glued down the tree, grass, animals and, of course, himself too!

We had a lot of fun creating our jungle. It was a great way to learn more about jungle animals while creating an art adventure.

Learning Extension: Have jungle animals already pre-cut and mix in other types of animals. Before making a collage with the animals, have your child sort the animals by what type of environment they live in.
